PURPOSE:To prolong the life of an optical modulating element by applying a voltage so that the pulse width in an off signal application period is shorter than that in an on signal application period and the polarity is opposite. CONSTITUTION:An electrochromic element is formed by laminating the 1st electrode 2 of a transparent conductor film, an oxidation coloring electrochromic layer 3, an insulating layer 4 of a dielectric film, and the 2nd electrode 5 of a conductor film successively on a transparent substrate 1. Electrochemical reaction is caused by applying a voltage between the electrodes 2 and 5 to perform coloration and discoloration. The voltage applied between the electrodes 2 and 5 in the on signal application period has larger width than the voltage in the off signal application period and is opposite in polarity. Thus, the stable operation life of the electrochromic element is prolonged. |
