EVALUATING METHOD OF CONNECTION POINT OF POLARIZATION MAINTAINING OPTICAL FIBER

PURPOSE:To evaluate a connection point individually by observing the intensity of back scattered light before and after the connection point, and measuring the difference in the back scattered light at the connection point. CONSTITUTION:A light source 1 is driven with a pulse of an electric pulse generator 8 to generate an optical pulse, which is deflected by a polarizer 2 in the main axis direction of a polarization conservative optical fiber 3 to be measured and made incident on the fiber 3 through a beam splitter 6. The optical pulse made incident on this fiber 3 is scattered backward in the optical fiber and at the connection point to return the incidence terminal as back scattered light. This back scattered light is reflected by the beam splitter 6 provided at the incidence terminal, guided to an analyzer 4, and passed through an ultrasonic wave deflector 7 and then converted by a photodetector 5 into an electric signal, which is amplified by an amplifier 10 and displayed on a display device through a signal processor 11.
