1. A process for the preparation of a cobalt-containing isotropic magnetic iron oxide of the formula (Cox Fe1-x )O[Fe2 zO3 ] where x is from 0.08 to 0.8, wherein alpha-FeOOH in aqueous suspension is reacted with Co(II) ions and Fe(II) ions at a pH of above 9, under an inert gas, at from 50 degrees C to the boiling point of the suspension at atmospheric pressure.
