The invention relates to a spreading and ironing device 1 for a strip of moistened material 2 in motion, comprising pairs of spreading cylinders 36, 37 and ironing equipments 4 for the selvedges of the strip of material. Known devices of this type only allow a speed of progress of the strip which is distinctly less than that which can be obtained in normal strip-processing installations. Given that according to the invention the pair of ironing irons 7, 8 of each ironing equipment 4 is divided into at least three short independent ironing zones A, B, C in which the ironing temperature and/or the slit width are individually adjustable for each zone, it is possible to make the strip of material 2 move at the same speed as in a strip- processing installation. <IMAGE>
