In thermal printing apparatuses, it is desirable to print selectively on recording media (1) made of thermal paper and normal paper. For this purpose, in known printing apparatuses, the inking unit for printing on thermal paper is to be removed from the pivotable carrier with the thermal print head. The invention is based on the object of providing a thermal printing apparatus for selectively printing on recording media (1) made of thermal or normal paper which requires simple handling and does not require removal of any components from the machine. This object is achieved by a control element, by means of which the drive devices (9; 32) for pressing on and lifting the thermal print head (6) from the recording medium (1) can be activated on the one hand alone when printing on thermal paper and, on the other hand, together with the drive members (14) for the inking unit when printing on normal paper. By means of a simple activation of a control element, printing can take place selectively on recording media (1) made of thermal paper and of normal paper. <IMAGE>
