In thermal printing apparatuses for printing on normal paper, an inking unit (12) is also arranged on the carrier (4), which is movable along the recording medium (1), with the thermal print head (6), said inking unit being inevitably drivable with the movement of the carrier (4). In order to prevent unnecessary ink ribbon transportation during the return movement of the carrier (4) to the beginning of the line, a freewheel coupling is arranged between the inking unit and the carriage drive. During movements of the carrier (4) in the printing direction, for example for tabulating, the ink ribbon transportation is not interrupted. The invention is based on the object of providing a thermal printing apparatus which guarantees optimum use of the ink ribbon. This object is achieved in that the carrier (4) has a drive device (20, 21, 22) which can be engaged with the ribbon drive means and can be controlled with the lifting movement of the print head (6) from the recording medium (1) in such a way that the drive of the ink ribbon (10) is interrupted. As a result, unnecessary ink ribbon transportation is reliably avoided in all non-printing function movements of the carrier (4), as a result of which optimum use of the ink ribbon is always guaranteed. <IMAGE>
