PURPOSE:To attain a plastic optical fiber having excellent light transmission efficiency by using the methyl methacrylate polymer obtd. by discharging a polymer soln. and removing the residual monomer and non-polymerizable org. solvent as a core component resin. CONSTITUTION:All of prescribed amts. of a monomer, polymn. initiator and mol.wt. adjusting agent are simultaneously charged into one polymn. vessel and are polymerized at a prescribed polymerizing temp. until the degree of polymn. is attained 40-60%. The polymer soln. is then discharged while a non-polymerizable org. solvent is added so as to maintain the desired polymer content at the point of the time when the polymer content in the polymer soln. attains a desired degree of polymn. The residual monomer is removed from the discharged polymer soln. by using a devolatizing apparatus installed right under the polymerizing device to obtain a methyl methacrylate polymer, and thereafter the polymer is conducted to a combined melt spinning device installed in continuation with the devolatizing apparatus. The polymer is made into a core- sleeve structure by using a flurine-contg. polymer as a sleeve component. The plastic optical fiber having a high level of optical transmission efficiency is obtd. |
