PURPOSE:To make stable tracking control by recording four kinds of pilot signals in each track as the second pilot signals, and at the same time, recording the first pilot signals in longitudinal direction of the track at a position earlier in time than above-mentioned position. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic tape 1 is rotated by a capstan motor 20 at a fixed speed. Signals from a pilot signal selector circuit 18 are recorded together with main signals by rotary magnetic heads 4, 5 through a video signal recording and processing circuit 50 in longitudinal direction of tracks formed at a specified angle on the tape 1. Pilot signals are recorded in the area P of overlapped part Q1 of the tape 1, and video signals are recorded in an area V. The first pilot signals f2, f3, f4, f1 are recorded in each track for a time given by lag tau determined by speed of heads 4, 5 and the tape 1, and uninterruptedly, the second pilot signals f1, f2, f3, f4 are recorded for a time taua. Thus, pilot signals can be separated from reproduced video signals, and S/N can be improved.
