PURPOSE:To operate a CCD sensor as if no defect exists as an image pickup output, even if a defect exists in the CCD sensor, by executing a correction by an output of an adjacent element to an image pickup output led out of the CCD sensor. CONSTITUTION:Prior to photographing, a defect position is held in an RAM3 by checking a CCD area sensor 1. Therefore, a reflecting body 4 is rotated so that a reflected light of the first surface 41 whose surface has been formed in deep- black is made incident to the CCD area sensor 1. In this case, with regard to an element from which an output being different from a signal level corresponding to an incident black level has been lead out, it is decided that the element concerned is defective, in a controlling circuit 2, and position information is written in the RAM3. Subsequently, when executing an image pickup, a reflected light from the third side face 43 having a specular surface is led as video information to the CCD area sensor 1, and basing on the informtion of the RAM3, as for the information of a defect position in it, it is controlled so as to be corrected by information of an adjacent picture element.
