Data being processed by a computer is protected on the occurrence of either a power fault condition of an intentional shut-down initiated by the computing means. In the former case, the power fault condition is sensed and provided as an anticipatory fault status signal to the computer which immediately executes a data protect routine to store data presently being processed. Subsequently, the computer issues a shut-down command to the power source. In the latter case, the computer initiates a shut-down command but executes a data protect routine prior to the shut-down command. In both cases the computer is itself connected to the power supply and governs power shut-down. The arrangement is described in connection with a computer provided on a motor vehicle to monitor vehicle parameters. Reference is also made to data compression by comparing sensed signals with stored threshold values, to a portable data collection unit allowing sensed values stored in the memories of several vehicles to be stored on tape in the portable unit, and to clock counting apparatus. |
