The process for the production of steel in accordance with the invention consists in succession: - in removing silica from the pig iron leaving the blast furnace employed for its production by adding to it a solid oxygen-containing agent while it flows into the channel of this blast furnace; - in removing the silica-removal slag at the exit of the channel; - in removing phosphorus from the pig iron from which silica has been removed in a steel converter with oxygen injection via the top while adding a dephosphorising agent thereto and while blowing a soft oxygen jet above the bath thus formed, while stirring the latter with the aid of a fluid delivered by the bottom of the converter; - in removing the dephosphorisation slag; and - in decarbonising the dephosphorised pig iron in a steel converter with oxygen injection via the top or via the bottom. The solid oxygen-containing agent may consist of iron ore, iron scale or agglomerate dust, while the dephosphorising agent may consist of Na2CO3, an Na2CO3-based mixture or pulverulent CaO.
