The invention relates to an air-compressing, direct injection internal combustion engine with a thermal-insulation-lined combustion chamber designed like a diffusor in the cylinder head and an injection nozzle as single-hole nozzle with swirl-generating means, which impart such a swirl to the fuel that on the nozzle outlet side a fuel jet cone of 20 DEG to 40 DEG is produced in the combustion chamber with swirl-free combustion air. The intention by measures of this type is to achieve a high temperature level in the combustion chamber, a good atomisation and mixture formation by the start of injection and low combustion noise.
