PURPOSE:To attain compatibility between devices by recording a tracking pilot signal to a recording region of each track in lengthwise direction independently of a digital signal, reproducing surely a pilot signal and controlling correctly a rotary head. CONSTITUTION:When a head 1B scans over two tracks of 5A4, 5B5, pilot signals PA15, PB10 recorded on a central part area AT3 of the tracks are extracted by sampling pulses SP1, SP2, a tracking error signal to the head 1B is obtained through the comparison of the tracking signals corresponding respectively to both pilot signals and the tracking error signal to a head 1A is obtained similarly. The capstan has only to be controlled by a tracking control signal being a mean value of both tracking error signals. Thus, the tracking control of the rotary head is conducted by reproducing the tracking pilot signal surely so as to attain compatibility between device.
