PURPOSE:The titled active carbon fibers, obtained by treating specific active carbon fibers with an acid, capable of effectively removing compound groups having a wide range of molecular weight at a high adsorption rate, and having improved water cleaning effect. CONSTITUTION:Polyacrylonitrile fibers containing >=60wt% acrylonitrile or oxidized fibers prepared by heat-treating the polyacrylonitrile fibers in an oxidizing atmosphere are impregnated with a compound of Mg, Ca, Sb, Sn, Al, Fe and P, etc., oxidized, and then fed to an activating furnace and activated with an activating gas, e.g. steam or CO2, at 800-1,400 deg.C for 1-120min to give active carbon fibers having >=800m<2>/g and >=2.5wt% ash, which are then dipped in a mineral acid or organic acid in 0.1-40wt% concentration and treated at 5-100 deg.C for 5-180min to afford the aimed active carbon fibers for cleaning water having 800-2,000m<2>/g specific surface area (SA) measured by the BET method 5X 10<-4>-14.5X10<-4> ratio between pore volume (VP) and SA and 5X10<-1>/sec methylene blue adsorption rate constant. |
