PURPOSE:To produce phenol useful as a synthetic intermediate for synthetic resins, surfactants, agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc., in high selectivity with a single-step reaction, by oxidizing benzene directly with O2 in the presence of a catalyst containing Te and O as essential constituent elements. CONSTITUTION:Phenol is produced by oxidizing benzene with molecular oxygen (preferably air) preferably in the presence of steam at 400-600 deg.C, using a catalyst containing tellurium and oxygen as essential constituent elements of the catalyst and having a composition of formula (x:y:z=1:0.01-6:0-6, preferably x:y:z=1:3-6:0-2) (the carrier of the catalyst is preferably silica). |
