PURPOSE:To obtain low-viscosity titled resin highly compatible with coating vehicle resin, by condensation of hydroxycarboxylic acid with a polymer of star-form structure derived from polyol and epsilon-caprolactone followed by introduction acidic group etc. into the resulting product. CONSTITUTION:(A) A polymer of star-form structure derived from the reaction between (i) >=3 hydroxyl groups bearing polyol (e.g. D-sorbitol) and (ii) epsilon-caprolactone and (B) a hydroxycarboxylic acid having both hydroxyl and carboxyl groups (e.g. l3-hydroxybutyric acid) are condensed so that the molar amounts [OH] and [COOH] for the components (A) and (B), respectively satisfy the equation: [COOH]/[OH]<=1, followed by introducing acidic and/or basic group(s) into the resulting product, thus obtaining the objective resin. EFFECT:Capable of giving pigment-dispersed coating composition with high solid content and good workability.
