摘要 PURPOSE:To produce an aliphatic alcohol, especially ethylene glycol or methanol, economically in high selectivity, by using a specific amount of a trialkyl phosphine as a cocatalyst in the direct liquid-phase production of the titled compound from carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a rhodium catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An aliphatic alcohol is produced by the liquid phase reaction of carbon monoxide with hydrogen in the presence of a rhodium compound and >=0.2g-mol, preferably 0.2-1,000g-mol, especially 0.2-500g-mol of a trialkyl phosphine per 1g-atom of the rhodium. The catalytic activity can be improved remarkably by the use of said cocatalyst, and the selectivity of polyethylene glycol useful as a raw material of polyester fiber, etc. and/or methanol useful as a raw material of formalin can be improved. Furthermore, the stability of the catalyst can be improved, and the generation of metallic precipitate which is a problem in the use of a rhodium-based catalyst can be suppressed.
