PURPOSE:To provide an agent having excellent compound-separating capability and isomer-separating capability, and useful especially for the resolution of optical isomers which are hardly separable by conventional method, by using a specific cellulose ether containing aromatic ring, as a main constituent element. CONSTITUTION:The objective separating agnet is composed mainly of a cellulose ester having substituent group and represented by formula I -formula VI (X and Y are alkyl, NO2, halogen, NH2, alkyl-substituted amino, CN, OH or COOH; lis integer of 0-5; m is integer of 0-7; n is integer of 1-5), or a compound obtained by the rearrangement of the side group (CnH2n) from 2- to 1-position in formula II, from 2- to 3- or 4-position in formula III, from 3- to 2-position in formula IV, from 5- to 2-position in formula V or from 3- to 2-position in formula VI. In addition to the usual low-molecular compounds, the optically active isomers which are extremely difficult to be separated directly by conventional method can be separated easily by the chromatographic treatment with said separating agent.
