A four bar friction window stay for mounting a window sash in a window frame has a geared pivotal connection (9, 10) between the frame end of the short arm 1 and the frame plate 3. The connection comprises a gear 9 rotatably mounted to the frame end of the short arm 1 which engages a rack 10 on the frame plate such that during closing and opening of the stay the frame end of the short arm is moved towards and away from the head of the stay. The window stay may also incorporate a locking head for security (13, Fig. 1) a movable long arm frame plate joint (34, Fig. 12) which allows the window to be opened widely for emergency egress for example, and a safety catch (44, Fig. 19) which can be used to limit the angle of opening of the window. <IMAGE>
