PURPOSE:To produce a catalyst which little suffers from the loss of polymerization activity due to poisonous impurities contained in an alpha-olefin, by subjecting a specified high-activity Ziegler-Natta catalyst to prepolymerization treatment with a small amount of an alpha-olefin and an extremely small amount of carbonyl sulfide. CONSTITUTION:A solid product is obtained by reacting TiCl4 with a reaction product between an organoaluminum compound (e.g., trimethylaluminum) and an electron donor (e.g., diisoamyl ether). The product is further reacted with an electron donor and an electron acceptor (e.g., TiCl4) to obtain a solid product. A catalyst dispersion obtained by mixing the product with an organoaluminum compound in an inert solvent is kept at 0-70 deg.C and subjected to prepolymerization treatment by allowing it to absorb slowly a small amount of an alpha-olefin and an extremely small amount of carbonyl sulfide. A catalyst having resistance to catalyst poisons contained in an alpha-olefin as a polymerization material can be obtained.
