A fluid-absorbing base for use in individual packs of meat (1) in which numerous support pellets (25) are distributed. The absorbent material which is moistened by fluids from the meat is normally compressed under the weight of the meat (5) located above it such that the absorbed fluid is pressed back into the package tray (3). In the absorbent base (9), the pellets (25) bear the weight of the meat (5) after the fluid has been absorbed, thus preventing the fluid from being pressed back into the tray. <IMAGE>
