PURPOSE:To obtain glass having a desired refractive index by a simple device at a relatively low temperature, by blending a solution of ammonium silicate with an ion different from the ion contained in the solution, gelatinizing the solution, and making it into glass under heating. CONSTITUTION:A solution of ammonium silicate is blended with an ion different from the ion contained in ammonium silicate. A cation such as sodium, potassi um etc. or an anion such as nitrate, sulfate, ion, etc. is used as the ion added. Then the solution is dried by hot air, gelatinized, and made into glass under heating at >= about 300 deg.C, to give the aimed glass. Consequently, glass having a desired refractive index, like quartz glass, is obtained. A compound (e.g., sodium silicate) different from ammonium silicate may be added instead of adding the ion. |
