A hand-held dental and oral hygiene device has a gripping part (1) with a handle (5) which is displaceable in the longitudinal direction of the gripping part (1) and can be rotated about an axis running in the longitudinal direction of the gripping part (1). The displaceability in the longitudinal direction serves to interrupt the through-flow of water temporarily. By turning the handle (5) the quantity of water flowing through can be controlled. These two functions are achieved by a pressure piece (10) which can be moved against a squeezed tube (13) by an inclination (9) in the handle (5). This inclination (9) is made to be effective in two coordinate directions for this purpose. <IMAGE>
