PURPOSE:To obtain most outer coordinates in all four directions of a pattern through two primary scans and to register both the most outer coordinate point and a discontinuous point, by adding a means to detect both forward and reverse side contours and a means to detect the discontinuous point of the contours in both directions. CONSTITUTION:A binary coded pattern on a pattern memory 11 of a pattern contour feature register is added to an addition circuit 12. Then a pattern is developed to a pattern memory 13 with addition of the information on the periphery of a center of the pattern. The contents of the memory 13 are scanned horizontally according to the control of a control circuit 18 and read out to be applied to the 1st and 2nd register circuits 14 and 15. The 1st and 2nd register memories 16 and 17 are provided opposite to the circuits 14 and 15. Then the addresses coincident with the pattern are written to the memories 16 and 17 respectively. The contour coordinates of both forward and reverse directions of the primary scan and the discontinuous points of both directions are registered at a time and then supplied to a multiplexer 19.
