PURPOSE:To miniaturize a device and to enhance picture quality by using a liquid crystal filter to function by applying an appropriate voltage as a filter provided on a two-dimensional photodiode. CONSTITUTION:A laminated liquid crystal filter 4 consisting of filters 41, 42 and 43 common to all element groups is provided on a photodetecting element group 2. The laminated filter 4 functions as a colorless filter to transmit all spectrum areas by controlliig of a filter control circuit 55. At this time, an output of each photodetecting element group is read out through coordinate selection circuits of X and Y axes 52 and 53, and transmitted to a color picture signal processing circuit 56. If this scan is completed, the liquid crystal filter 41 is set on in order to transmit only a red color, and a red color picture can be obtained. In this case, a liquid crystal layer has appropriate thickness, and functions by impressing a proper voltage. Picture with green and blue light beams can be obtained by the liquid crystal filters 42 and 43 in the same manner. A choloesteric-based liquid crystal can be used as a laminated filter.
