PURPOSE:To produce an aromatic aldehyde economically, in high catalytic activity, by hydrogenating an aromatic carboxylic acid in vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising zirconium oxide having specific physical properties. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic aldehyde, especially benzaldehyde, is produced economically by hydrogenating an aromatic carboxylic acid, especially benzoic acid, in vapor-phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising zirconium oxide having an acidity function Ho of >=+4.0, preferably +6.0-+8.0 measured by adsorption of Hammette indicator and a pore volume having a radius of <=100Angstrom (100X10<-7>mm.) of >=0.05ml measured by mercury penetration method. The catalyst can be produced by using e.g. a high-purity soluble zirconium salt (e.g. zirconyl nitrate) as a raw material, precipitating the hydroxide gel of the salt from an aqueous solution with ammonia water, etc., and drying and calcining the precipitated gel. |
