The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for evaluating hits in fencing contests. In a method, valid hits are distinguished from the invalid hits and a decision is made on the hit display. The distinctions and decisions are made as a function of the size of the mechanical impulse of the hits and of the timing of the electrical contact between the two sabres or between the attacking sabre and the impact surface. An apparatus consists of a common circuit unit provided with two hit display lamps, their two connected sabres, two metal vests and two masks. The circuit unit is provided with a timer which responds when the two sabres meet and locks the hit display for a predetermined locking period. Moreover, a vibration detector is built into a hilt of each of the two sabres. The circuit unit is provided with a unit for measuring the pulse filling factor which permits the hit display only when a predetermined pulse filling factor of the contact sequence between the attacking sabre and the impact surface is reached.
