A 1-2 shift valve 140 includes a spool comprising two spool elements 141, 142 having a pressure bearing surface (on the end of the element 142 remote from the element 141) arranged to receive either a throttle pressure or a detent (kickdown) pressure. In a first speed position, the spool element 142 closes off the detent line pressure and receives the throttle pressure on the pressure bearing surface. On the other hand, at the second speed position, the spool element 142 closes off the throttle pressure line 409 and receives the detent pressure on the pressure bearing surface. A governor pressure corresponding to vehicle speed and the force of a spring 143 are also applied to the spool in opposition, the spring 143 being arranged between the element 142 and the spool 242 of a low coast shift valve 240. <IMAGE>
