PURPOSE:To enhance low temp. activity and response, in an apparatus for detecting fine carbon particles remaining in exhaust gas of a Diesel engine or an internal-combustion engine on the basis of the change in the electric resistance between electrodes, by attaching a heat generator to completely burn the smoke accumulated to an electrode part. CONSTITUTION:Electrodes 2, 2 are provided to a substrate 1 to form a detection part 4 between the electrodes 2, 2 and a heat generator 5 is provided to the opposite surface of the substrate 1 corresponding to the detection part 4 while the substrate 1 other than the detection part 4 is covered with protective films 7, 8 to constitute a smoke sensor. When this smoke sensor is introduced into exhaust gas containing smoke to detect said smoke, the smoke accumulated between the electrodes 2, 2 is heated to about 400-600 deg.C by the heat generator 5 and burnt off and, therefore, no influence is exerted upon detected electric resistance. As a result, by attaching the heat generator 5 to the substrate 1 corresponding to the detection part, low temp. activity and response are enhanced and the smoke sensor can be inexpensively prepared in a simple structure. |
