Stopcock or tap of the type which has a rigid body with a through passage for fluid from a supply pipe. An exterior actuator such as a handwheel can be used to displace a valve plug to close or open the passage. An elastically-deformable diaphragm is fixed to the body and has an area movable by the valve plug which can sandwich the area between the plug and the periphery of the body passage to close the passage. The diaphragm is made of an elastomer such as natural or synthetic rubber.
