A weak base, e.g. alkaline (bi)carbonate or ammonia, is added to an aluminium sulphate soln. for neutralisation, the neutralised soln. is kept at 10-30 deg.C and the weak base is added to render the soln. basic and produce a soln. of basic aluminium sulphate of formula Aln(SO4).3n-m/2(OH)m, whose basicity (m/3n x 100) is 15-67%.
