<p>Apparatus for converting blocks of foamed synthetic plastic material into chips has a severing device which removes from a block a continuous layer or a series of discrete layers of foamed material, a severing device with a series of coaxial rotary disc-shaped knives which subdivide each layer into a plurality of parallel elongated strips, and a severing device which converts the strips into discrete chips. Each chip has a substantially rhomboidal cross-sectional outline. The chip forming severing device has a shaft which is parallel to the shaft that carries the disc-shaped knives of the device that converts the layer or layers into strips, and the shaft of the chip forming severing device carries one or more cutters with straight or helical edges. The unit which advances the layer or layers past the disc-shaped knives of the strip forming severing device has several endless belt conveyors which advance the strips all the way into the range of the chip forming severing device.</p> |
