PURPOSE:To enable improvement in the threshold value of an optical damage with a simple construction by providing a solid-state electrolyte layer on an optical waveguide in contact therewith and providing an electrode pair having a potential difference to prevent generation of polarization. CONSTITUTION:Titanium is thermally diffused at a high temp. onto a base plate 1 consisting of a lithium niobate crystal to form an optical waveguide and ZrO2 is deposited by evaporation thereon to form a solid-state electrolyte layer 6. A DC power source 9 is connected to Al electrodes 7, 8 on the layer 6 and a prescribed voltage is impressed thereon. An optical damage occurs mainly in the polarization generated when electron is trapped but if the structural body is constituted in the above-mentioned way, the trapped electron escapes toward the layer 6 and the generation of the polarization is prevented. The threshold value is thus increased to 5mW/mm. by provision of the layer 6 in contrast with 0.1mW/ mm.threshold value of the structural body to which the layer 6 is not provided. |
