The rope winch is provided with a driven rope drum as well as with a clamping disc arranged coaxially to it and driven in synchronism with it. The rope drum has a friction surface lying at an angle to the drum axis. Allocated to the friction surface is a friction mating surface running at a corresponding angle and rotating with the clamping disc. When a load is being fetched, the sectional lengths of the load rope which are wound up on the rope drum produce an axially directed force component. The friction surfaces are thereby displaced relative to one another as a function of the load to be fetched, so that a load-dependent clamping force is exerted on the load rope.
