In order to be able to detect plaque on teeth, the latter are spread with a fluorescing material which adheres to points where there is plaque, and subsequently illuminated by means of a special light probe. The detection of plaque is facilitated by an instrument which is characterised by an opto-transmitter (7, 9) and an opto-receiver (8, 11) arranged immediately adjacent thereto, and by an evaluating electronic system which is constructed such that transmitted and received optical signals are stored in a memory. The quotient of the memory contents is formed by means of a divider and displayed in percent on a display. <IMAGE>
