The invention relates to an essentially tubular element (a sleeve), which is designed to enclose a part of the body and thereby apply a pressure against the latter in order to produce and maintain a liquid and gas-evacuated sphere in a peripheral area of the enclosed part of the body and/or in order to form a support and/or pressure connection and/or in order to mechanically immobilise the part of the body. The sleeve is made up of abutting, essentially annular chambers 4 distributed in succession in the axial direction of the sleeve, the walls 41 of the chambers essentially being composed of flexible and/or elastic material. The chambers are enclosed by a common outer peripheral pressure cell 3, which extends in the axial direction of the sleeve and which is provided with connecting elements 12, 13 in order to place the cell 3 under pressure by means of a pressure medium from an external pressure source 14. The pressure cell has a wall 5, which faces the chambers 4 and is connected to valve elements 6 for acting on these or forming part of the valve elements, the said valves being designed to close or open connecting elements for the passage of pressure medium between adjoining chambers. When using the sleeve a high internal pressure is imparted to the pressure cell 3, which controls the opening of the valve elements 6, when the chambers 4 are supplied with pressure medium. The sleeve permits an essentially continuous distribution of the area of the part of the body that is placed under pressure. <IMAGE>
