It has been possible to date to measure the radial play of resilient corrugated packing strips only with the rotor dismantled. The device according to the invention can be introduced into the air gap, and the radial play of the resilient corrugated packing strips can be reliably tested or measured by means of the force/distance characteristic recorded by it. The two congruent wedge strips 4, 5 are introduced into the air gap of the machine. The winding 6 located in the stator 3 is mounted by means of the resilient corrugated packing strip 7 and the slot wedges 8. The two wedge strips 4, 5 are moved by means of a mating strip 9 which is mounted on a tension bolt 10. The tension bolt 10 is supported in a hollow piston cylinder 11. The tension rod 10 is moved by means of a hydraulic or pneumatic device 12. A fine manometer 13 is interconnected into the line for the purpose of measuring the expenditure of force. The distance is measured by means of the distance dial gauge 14, which bears with its measurement pin 15 against the tension bolt. <IMAGE>
