A voltage-controlled start-stop oscillator (1) is presented, the frequency of which is first synchronised with that of a reference oscillator (3), the control voltage (AFC) of which is then stored by a sample/hold circuit (4) and which is then stopped and then started again with the correct phase angle by means of a control signal. The control signal contains several pulses which also synchronise the oscillator (1) during the start-up process. The frequency of the oscillator (1) can be an integral multiple of the repetition rate of the pulses of the control signal. An application is, for example, the recovery of a message which is transmitted in the horizontal blanking interval of a television signal. <IMAGE>
