To avoid unwanted contacts between the valve and the reciprocating piston in the top dead centre range of the latter when the non-positive engagement between the cam and the valve is broken due to high speeds of rotation, the valve-closing spring is designed in such a way that its turns form a block and hence a stroke limitation (4) for the valve in the course of the "free" valve lift curve (1') which develops according to ballistic laws. <IMAGE>
