PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a medicine, cosmetic or a raw material therefor, and a raw material for alpha-amino acids, in high yield easily at a low cost, by reacting a specific dioxane derivative with prussic acid. CONSTITUTION:A dioxane derivative of formula I (R is H or 1-15C aliphatic or aromatic residue; R<1> and R<2> are H or 1-10C hydrocarbon residue) is reacted with prussic acid in a solvent, e.g. water or methanol, at -10-+100 deg.C, preferably 10-50 deg.C for >=30min, and the resultant reaction mixture is hydrolyzed in an aqueous alkali or under acidic conditions to give the aimed substance of formula II. The amount of the prussic acid to be used is 1.0-10mol, preferably 1.6-5mol based on one mol dioxane derivative.
