PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound by a simple operation, by reacting isonicotinic acid with thionyl chloride in a system comprising an acid acceptor such as pyridine, N-disubstituted amide or tertiary amine or it and further an organic solvent, reacting the resultant product with a 2-aminobenzophenone. CONSTITUTION:Isonicotinic acid is reacted with thionyl chloride in the presence of a pyridine shown by the formula I (R is methyl, etc.), an N-disubstituted amide (e.g., N,N'-formamide, etc.) shown by the formula II (R<1> and R<2> are alkyl, etc.; R<3> is H, methyl, etc.), or a tertiray amine (e.g., triethylamine, etc.) shown by the formula III (R<4> is methyl, etc.), and, if necessary, an inert organic solvent. The resultant substance is then reacted with a 2-aminobenzophenone derivative shown by the formula IV (X is halogen, etc.; Y is halogen, etc.) to give a compound shown by the formula V. This compound is further reduced to give a compound shown by the formula VI in high purity in high yield. The compound shown by the formula V is useful as an agricultural and horticultural fungicide, and the compound shown by the formula VI as a plant growth regulator for gramineous plants.
