PURPOSE:To obtain naphthalene useful as a raw material for phthalic acid anhydride, intermediate for dyes, insecticide, antifungal agent or lubricant, etc. easily in high purity from a naphthalene-containing feedstock hydrocarbon oil, by azeotropic distillation with a gamma-lactone. CONSTITUTION:A bottom residual oil, wash oil or petroleum obtained in recovering naphthalene by deacidifying a medium oil, e.g. naphthalene oil, obtained by fractionation of coal tar, and distilling the deacidified oil is catalytically cracked to give a naphthalene-containing feedstock hydrocarbon oil (K), e.g. by-product oil, is mixed with a gamma-lactone (L) at about 1:0.2-1:5 weight ratio between the oil (K) and the gamma-lactone (L), and distilled in a distillation column 3 by the conventional method. Water (W) at ordinary temperature is added to the resultant distilled azeotropic distillation fraction 7 in a mixing tank 8 to crystallize naphthalene (N) therefrom. The separated naphthalene (N) is then separated in a centrifuge 10 to recover advantageously the naphthalene (N) from the above-mentioned feedstock oil (K).
