PURPOSE:To perform a halftone dotting processing without need for a graphic memory for exclusive use in storing a halftone dot font, by a method wherein a part of pi-characters is used as a halftone dot font, and the font itself is delt with as a character. CONSTITUTION:Halftone-dotted pi-character patterns are formed by a pi-character pattern forming means (b), and a document is inputted by a document-inputting means (c). A pi-character code inputting means (d) designate a halftone-dotting region in the inputted document and the halftone-dotted pi-character patterns. When a halftone-dotted pi-character code C in the document is discriminated by a halftone-dotted pi-character code discriminating means (e), halftone- dotting printing is conducted in the designated region in the document by using the designated halftone-dotted pi-character patterns by a halftone-dotting printing means (f). Accordingly, halftone-dotting can be conducted without need for graphic memories for exclusive use in storing the halftone dot font, and halftone- dotting in an arbitrary pattern can be performed by appropriately forming the halfone-dotted pi-character font.
