PURPOSE:To separate the titled substance useful as an intermediate for producing mammalian dolichol from an extract, by extracting a leaf of a plant belonging to the genus Keteleeria, Tsuga, Pseudotsuga or Larix of the family Pinaceae with an organic solvent, and obtaining the extract. CONSTITUTION:A leaf of a plant belonging to the genus Keteleeria, Tsuga, Pseudotsuga or Larix of the family Pinaceae is extracted with an organic solvent, e.g. a hydrocarbon, halogenated hydrocarbon, ether, or ester or ketone, and a polyprenyl compound of the formula (A is OH or acyloxy; n is an integer 12- 18) or a mixture thereof is obtained from the extract. The aimed substance is separated from the extract by subjecting the extract to the separation method, e.g. chromatography, fractional dissolution method, etc., and isolating a fraction exhibiting 0.18-0.25 or 0.50-0.55 Rf value under conditions as to give 0.40- 0.45 Rf value of solanesyl acetate using a thin layer chromatographic plate manufactured by Merck & Co., Inc. with a mixed solvent of n-hexane and ethyl acetate as a developing solvent.
