The monitoring device is a two-terminal network formed by a set 10 of basic elements 2 connected in series and by input and output terminals. Each basic element comprises a resistor R1, ..., Rn and a display unit 61 to 67, 81 to 87 connected in parallel. The resistances of the resistors vary monotonically in the order of the basic elements. The monitoring device is connected in series in the line to be examined.
