A unit-load carrier 1 is accurately aligned in its running direction, arrow 3, relative to a running rail 22 by a single indexing wheel 31 and is then locked in the aligned position. The indexing wheel 31 is in drive connection with a servomotor 38 in order to align the unit-load carrier 1 and is provided with a brake device 40 in order to lock the unit-load carrier 1. The servomotor 38 and the brake device 40 are influenced by a measuring and control unit 73 which, adjacent to the indexing member 31, engages with a measuring wheel in the unit-load carrier 1. <IMAGE>
