PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a precursor for herbicide with a reduced amount of a catalyst, by chlorinating p-toluenesulfonyl chloride in the presence of chlorosulfonic acid or sulfuric acid, and an antimony compound as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:p-Toluenesulfonyl chloride is chlorinated in the presence of chlorosulfonic acid and an antimony compound or sulfuric acid and the antimony compound, to give a nucleus-chlorinated p-toluenesulfonyl chloride. This process is advantageous, because an amount of the antimony compound added is sufficiently <=5wt% based on p-toluenesulfonyl chloride, its amount is small, and a production ratio of 2,6-dichlorotoluene-4-sulfonyl chloride, the main desired product, is high, the reaction rate is high. The desired compound is advantageous as a precursor for 2,6-dichlorotoluene, a herbicide.
