PURPOSE:To collate at high speed and with high accuracy by dividing characteristic for collation from a characteristic dictionary for chracteristic to be collated of an input pattern and making collation while shifting against reference point and boundary point for each partial characteristic. CONSTITUTION:A characteristic register 10 latches characteristic to be collated extracted from the input pattern. A dictionary register 13 stores characteristic for colation from a characteristic dictionary 14. In this case, preceding stage of partial characteristics obtained by dividing characteristics for collation is shifted in the order of l-n stage, and shift registers 131-13n in whish number of stages is increased successively are provided. The content of the register 10 is divided into 101-10n corresponding to partical characteristics for collation and sent successively to partial collating units 11l-11n of n stages of a collating section 11. The partial collating unit 11 makes matching while positioning for characteristics to be collated to partial characteristics and near a reference point at front end, and oututs an optimum position and similarity. Collation of high accuracy can be made by so-called pipeline processing that makes processing successively.
