In order to be able to use commercial sheathed-element glow plugs better than hitherto, as mixture formation auxiliaries and ignition sources, even in an engine at operating temperature, it is proposed that a solid body of oxide ceramic or highly heat-resistant material be arranged at the free end of the glow tube. The evaporation and ignition of the fuel can thereby be considerably improved, owing to the high heat capacity and poor heat dissipation (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
