Lubricating oil additive compositions having good acid-neutralizing properties and relatively low ash content and containing certain dispersant metal carbamates are prepared by combining in a solvent at a temperature suitable for reaction to occur; (a) at least one ashless nitrogen- containing compound selected from ammonia, ammonium salts, and organic compounds containing only carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen and having at least one -NH group, (b) a basically reacting metallic compound, (c) at least one suspending agent for component (b), and (d) one or more of carbon dioxide, carbon disulfide, carbon oxysulfide and sulfur dioxide, the ratio of the reactants (a), (b), (c) and (d) being such that from 1/3 to 3/4 of the alkalinity value of the additive composition is derived from the ashless portion of said composition. Lubricating oil compositions containing such metal carbamates can be derived from concentrates containing from 40 to 85% by weight of a carbamate selected from those of the general formulae: <IMAGE> wherein M is an alkali or alkaline earth metal, X is sulfur or oxygen, R is an aliphatic hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 50 carbon atoms, R' is hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 50 carbon atoms, x is an integer from 1 to 10, y is 1 or 2 and is equal to the valence of M, and z is zero or an integer between 1 and 10. |
